What Is an NIE Number and Why Do You Need It?
The NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is your personal foreign identification number in Spain. It's essential if you are planning to engage in transactions for which your tax identification is necessary, such as buying a property, a car, opening a bank account, amongst others.
It is very important to note that the NIE is only a number and does not mean that you have residency or any type of stay or residence permit in Spain.
What Can You Use Your NIE For?
Here's a short list of situations where an NIE is required:
Signing a work or rental contract
Opening a Spanish bank account -in some cases it's posible to open a bank account only with a passport number-
Paying taxes or registering with the tax office (Hacienda)
Buying property or a car
Enrolling in university
Starting a business in Spain -for which you will have to obtain a residence permit as well-
In short: if you're doing anything official, you'll need it.
Where and How Do You Apply for an NIE?
You can apply:
From Spain
At the Oficina de Extranjería or Policía Nacional in the city where you're living.
Appointment required (cita previa).
From Abroad
Through a Spanish consulate in your home country.
Appointment required.
How Long Does It Take?
In Spain: Usually 1–3 weeks, depending on the province and appointment availability.
At a Spanish Consulate: Often faster, but requires planning and mailing time.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Not bringing copies of all your documents
Booking your appointment too late (slots fill up quickly)
Not justifying the reason to apply enough or clearly
Not paying the Modelo 790 fee in advance
Can a Lawyer Help You With the NIE?
Absolutely. As an immigration lawyer based in Barcelona, I help clients:
Get appointments faster
Prepare and double-check documents
Represent them via power of attorney (apoderamiento) if needed
Solve issues with expired or rejected applications
Bonus Tip: NIE ≠ Residency
Having an NIE doesn’t mean you have legal residency in Spain. It’s just an identification number. If you’re staying long-term, you’ll still need to apply for a residence permit or visa.
